Science Current Events

Some interesting science events:

1. A shark that "walks" on the sea floor was discovered. Go to the link, scroll down, and check out the video!

2. A women "space tourist" was launched into space (you could go too, for a mere $20 million dollars).

3. An extra-solar planet that could theoretically float in water was discovered (thanks Jeff H - 3rd period). Go to the link, and check out the interactive feature on how we find these planets.

4. A weird distorted solar system was found. This is based on the idea of a brown dwarf - a space object like a star, but without enough mass to ever start fusion.

If you had a chance to travel in space, would you? How much would you pay?

Tommy - I would go to space in a heartbeat! Unfortunately, I don't have $20 million dollars laying around (if I did, I can't say that I'd be teaching).

Additional question: If you were asked to participate in either a (really) long-term space journey or the chance to colonize the moon or another planet, would you? You might not be able to come home for a really long time, if ever. What do you think - would you do it or not?

I would go.... for about 10 dollars.

And I would travel in a Star Destroyer!

Im not sure I would want 2 go 2 space. that would be kinda freaky, but it would be cool 2 be able 2 float and have no gravity and stuff!!!

HAH!!!!!... i feel special! I'm gonna brag about it on monday cause i feel so special..and gabriel...id rather take a TIE Interceptor..it goes faster and you cant get lost in it. =P

What the freak? We're arguing on whether to take a TIE Interceptor or a Star Destroyer into space? Ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!

Nick and Loren - I'm not sure how we got to discussing a theoretical trip to space in two science fiction vehicles, but I'm just the moderator...

Of course, since it is theoretical, anything is possible.

you realize that the shuttle built to replace the Challenger (the one that blew up in 1986) was named Enterprise after the Star Trek vehicle of the same name.

What??? Thats what I was talking about??? I dont know Ms.Q? I was just making a stupid non relevant comment.w/e!

Loren, TIE fighters are from Star Wars. The Enterprise is from Star Trek. Big difference.

Thank You!!!

I find it amusing when science fiction drfits into real science...

I'm sure it has to do with scientists being science fiction fans.

If the engineers that built the space shuttle had been a little younger (and working in the late 80s instead of 70s), they might have been Star Wars fans instead of Star Trek, and the replacement space shuttle could've been the Millenium Falcon instead of the Enterprise.

What do you think? Can you think of other instances where science fiction becomes science fact?

Ms.Q im sorry but if i had 20 million dollars and they asked me to go to the moon i would say NOOOOOOO in a heart beat.... are you crazy, how about if you never come back or something haha well thats my opinion on it =)

Ya Nick I rather not.

If I ever had the chance to go into space I don't think I would. First of all you lose to much weight and also there is just a little eeensy weeensy chance of dying (THE CHANCE IS HUGE).
If I had to go I would pay $100, I wonder about space sometimes but I am not that interested.
