Panda Cam, Fun Website of the Week, and More!

Here's the link to Zoo Atlanta's Panda Cam - check in and see how the mother and baby are doing.

Fun Website of the Week - this is too cool - VIRTUAL DISSECTIONS! And, I love the name of the site - www.froguts.com Although the site is a subscription, it has three sample virtual disections/activities - click on the "demos" button in the upper right hand corner. I tried all three. I liked the frog, but I really liked the owl pellet.

Finally, discussion topic (I thought of it after reading Jane's and Hilda's posts about panda's as pets):

I have owned, in addition to ordinary cats, dogs, fish, and parakeets, hamsters, guinea pigs, tarantulas, geckos, newts, Madagascar hissing cockroaches, and a giant African millipede.

What is the coolest or weirdest pet you've ever owned? What animal would you love to have for a pet?

I just watched the panda cam, that is soooooooo cool! The panda was sleeping though and you could only see the mother but still is really awesome. The cam would be really cool when the pandas were awake but still the I love it!!!!!!!!

p.s.- Mrs.Q, I love your blogs! They are so fun and really cool!!!!!

Yay! The panda cam!
Im gonna go watch it now.

I've owned 3 dog, 5 cats, and 12 hamsters (the petsmart people were wrong.. They weren't both females..), a fish (the story on how I got him is kinda funny), and my brother got 2 nasty frogs for hi birthday a couple of years ago. I'm so scared of frogs. haha

Hilda - I started with two "girl" hamsters and I ended up with over 30! My sister and I were able to sell them back to the pet shop. We ended up bredding them for sale for about a year and a half - better than babysitting money!

Well I didnt have a lot of hamsters or any weird animals but I remember when I was younger we started out with two cats and over years they multipled to where at one time we had almost 30 cats!!!! we sold or gave away a lot of them. Even though I think one was born with three eyes, but that was so long ago I cant remember. well that was my "cool" animal story thing.

Even if you went to the zoo, the image on the camera is all you would see right now - so, even if nothing is happening, I like being able to check in from the comfort of my own home.

And it's cheaper!

Anonymous said...

Thats mean. I care about the bear!!!!! and it actually does bring in money to the city. panda bears are cool!!!

The pandas are china's, they do bring the city money, but, they don't make enough to overcome the huge amounts china charges us for them.

I did a little research (from the AJC):

"Cost is estimated at $2.7 million annually, including $1.1 million in loan fees to China, which owns the animals. The balance goes to maintenance costs. The birth of a cub could significantly increase those costs [due to special care]. The zoo has been negotiating with China to reduce the loan fees. The animals arrived here in 1999 on a 10-year loan."

This cost could be offset by increase in visitors:

"Dennis Kelly said earlier this year that a newborn would increase annual attendance from the current 700,000 to 1 million in the first year and possibly draw new sponsorships."

Again, I am fairly certain that no Federal money goes to support the pandas (not sure about state money), but most people feel the cost is outweighed by the conservation and education benefit as well as increase zoo visits and sponsorship. It's not as simple as "they're not ours so why do we care?"
