We Didn't Start the Fire...or did we?

A mini-history lesson in an old Billy Joel song from the late 80s - did you catch the science references?

I like this song but you can never get it out of your head. I am glad Mrs. Quenan posted it though because it gives me some ideas for the decades project. But I agree with Kelly that even though we have not had the third world war yet or hopefully we wont have one but we have seen a lot of changes from the sixties onward. Now we have the ipod touch and the Macbook Air which is like the smallest thing ever and so many new tests on diseases and vaccines have gone on in the last half century. I also liked how the kids put the dates at the bottom of the pictures it is kind of helps me get a general idea of when these happened in terms of what decade. Now I am singing the song in my head. Cheese Louis!we didnt start the fire. hehehehehehehe

I liked this video and the song in background. It's really catchy.
I don't really think I caught a lot of Science references, but i got the vaccines part. I think that was one of the greatest discoveries of that time.

The space monkey was interesting too. I always wanted to see how he looked. I think we had a conversation about that in our Science class once. That after the monkey returned from space, people said that he was happy and "laughing". Which actually meant that he was scared.

we watched that in social studies! yeah that was really interesting... but it wont get out of your head! and its kinda out of order near the end.. which is confusing.
and yeah,, it also helps with the decades project because it tells all the important things. i always only remember the line about the catcher in the rye -- so annoying!

This song's lyrics do not make sense because if anything it should sy we didn't stop the fire. Even though this isn't true, Billy Joel totally messed up.

Lindsey and Stuart - I think Billy Joel (singer/somgwriter) is saying that we weren't the first people to have these issues - they have been around as long as civilization.

Kelly (and others) - there were several scientists/inventors shown and there were also references to atomic energy and chemistry as well as changes in technology.

yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah we watched this in social studies. when i first heard the music i was like this sounds familiar and then i was like oooh we watched it in mrs bonsteins class. but i am happy that you posted it because it goes by really fast and it gave me a few more ideas for my decades project too. but i did not really see many science related topics other than the landing on the moon and stuff. but i didn't start looking for it until half way through. it was cool though and i have the tune stuck in my head too like xanna montanta
