"Influenza Di Freddo"

Influenza di freddo is Italian for "influence of the cold," which some historians say is the origin of the name influenza, or the flu. Doctors and scientists have long wondered why flu season was typically in the winter - some ideas include everyone being inside and spreading germs or not getting enough Vitamin D to strengthen the immune system.

Now a scientist has found what may be the reason - the flu virus likes the cold, dry air of winter better. Read more here.

Despite the new research, flying to a tropical location is out of reach for most of us to avoid the flu - most doctors recommend getting a flu shot. At the very least, minimize exposure, take care of yourself, and wash your hands!

How do you keep yourself healthy during flu season? What do you do if you do get sick?

I don't know if you recall one year where they were running low on flu shots. Well, that was the first year i didn't get one. It was absolutely fantastico! I have never gotten one since because i am so healthy, my docter said i was not required to get one, onlike my unhealthy brother and sister! HA HA HA! (Actually my brother has Asthma and my sister has Spina Bifida, but still, HA HA HA!) I think washing your hands is really the best thing you can do to keep yourself healthy, especially during the flu season. Wash your hands after you come home from school, before you eat, and if you touch ABC gum underneath the desk. Strange as it seems, your hands can get covered from bacteria that existed on that gum under the desk, or that doorknob. when your hand comes in contact with something others touch too, you should definitly wash your hands before eating, or coming anywhere close to the vacinity of your face.
In conclusion, WASH YOUR HANDS! It might just save you from the evil flu virus!

Influenza kills people. You guys should really consider washing your hands more often. Also, do not share food/drink w/ people w/ the flu, cause you'll probably get it too. yeahhhhhhhhhhh... I am going to do my work book now so i don't get a zero. Bye!

About every other year i seem to get the flu. I try to be careful about washing my hands and not sharing anything with anyone who is sick, but i can not remeber the last time i got a flu shot so I guess that is a big part of it. I exercise a lot so when i do get the flu it is usually not very bad as I try to stay healthy as much as possible. When i do get the flu...I dont do much of anything, but sleep on the couch and try to drink plenty of fluids without stirring up too much throat pain. Sadly i usually do not drink enough fluids when i get the flu and end up passing out when i go to the doctors office. They always say the same old "you dont have enough electrolytes bla bla bla" speech but it seems no matter how much of an effort i put into drinking i always pass out at the doctors office....strangely only at the doctors office. I think i have had the flu enough times, so i think i will get a flu shot this year.

Flu is a really bad thing, mmkay. Now in order to not get the flu, you have to stay healthy. DUHHH! Well I usually get out and get active at least 4 times a week just to make sure my lungs are all properly working and such. You should also wash your hands, just to be courteous to others, cus that's always nice. Hanging out with someone who has the flu is probably a really stupid move, seeing as u could get it. I really thank Influenza Di Freddo is kind of a dumb name or whatever, but it's french and we don't get along with french people very well. So I guess that's about it everybody. In conclusion, the flu is a really bad thing, mmkay.

Natalie - good point about people with asthma - people with compromised immune systems and respiratory problems tend to have more serious complications from the flu - it is important for them to get immunized if their doctor recommends it.

Another bad thing about the flu is that the virus mutates, which is why you can get it more than once, like Elyes.

Robert - influenza di freddo is actually Italian. Influenza de froid would be French. But you're right about one thing: Wash your hands!!

Yeah... I wash my hands. But about the shots, I don't like them. It's really only necessary for people at risk like Natlaie's sister or my grandma. If I wasn't such a bad little kid (hitting doctors numerous times) I think the people would be nicer with my shots (not stabbing me in painful ways).
Now that I think about it, having the flu is not the worst kind of sickness. As Natalie said, it does kill people. It is also pretty over-come-able, as we found out from Elyes. I think I've had influenza before. I am alive.
BUT
to prevent it you should wash your hands (as everyone said)and stay away from people with the flu.
the period is over so i need to stop now.

Washing your hands and staying healthy is the key thing to not get Influenza di freddo.
To stay healthy you must always eat 3 meals a day and never forget breakfast. Excersice atleast 30 mins a day. Last but not least have some social fun talking to friends, going to the mall etc.
But do not do all this work without doing your homework.
Mentally being healthy is very important so always read any kinds of books. magazines etc.

if you do get a flu. Drink lots of fluids, take lots of rest, do not strain yourself, etc. If your case turns out too bad consult your local doctor immedietly.

Always try to be healthy and stay out of trouble.

Even though the flu is viral and the best cure is prevention (washing hands, taking care of yourself, etc), there are things a docotr can do to help you if it's caught early. Antibiotics don't help unless you get a secondary bacterial infection.
