Did You Know? Shift Happens.

Watch the video - note what facts surprise you the most. You might want to watch it more than once. What do you think this means for you and the class of 2012? Your kids? Does this change the question, "what do you want to be when you grow up?"

I love the stat that most people are training for jobs that don't even exist yet. I look at my daughter, who is 20 and a college junior. She is majoring in English, yet many of her classes have been in web design and writing for the web. She is an artist, yet lately she has been working with computer manipulations. She could someday work for a web designer or game company writing story lines or designing graphics - there is no college major for that...yet.

Read this article in the Marietta Daily Journal about the Wheeler Robotic team - note how it talks about Southern Poly Tech adding a new major - Mechatronics. That would've sounded like science fiction when I was in the 8th grade.

um...whoa. I guess that puts things in perspective now. Being American, I put my head down a bit shamefully at the beginning of that. But more towards the technology side, that video made me realize that at our school, we are more advanced than the so-called "average American". The STEM class is, to the rest of the country, nonexistent. There is no standardized testing or those stupid essential questions. In Stem, we learn things that might just seem like a fun project now, but will be major parts of life in the future (or so says the video writer). Also, I am on the robotics team. The coach, Jeremy, is a professional computer programmer. How crazy is that? He programs manufacture machines as his job!
The fact that wowed me the most was that someone is making a computer that could compute more than the human mind is capable of...or something along those lines. How is that even possible???

Dang.. We're getting too smart for our own good it seems. Or is it the other way around? There's something to think about... Since the early 1990's we have entered the period in human history known as the Information Age. The term refers to the sudden abundance of technological resources that has become available to us. It's an unconventional type of revolution society is going through that is producing these "exponential" growth patterns in technology. So I guess those statistics should be looked at as history in the making.

The info on China and India was crazy too. My favorite was when the video said, "...so they have more honors kids than we have kids." My other favorite was that China will soon have the highest English speaking population the world. I think China will be the next global superpower and surpass the United States. So basically, China will rule the world along with Canada. Either that or robots smarter than humans will take over.

"Platner & Nate-Doggg" - I gave you both two points - nice thoughtful posts.

I like the part about the honors kids, too, Nathan - it worries me as a science teacher that we are just not preparing our students as well as they rest of the world.

Thats really crazy....that there will be a computer that can process more than the entire human race is capable of before my life is over. I don't even see how thats possible if we are the ones building it...it doesent seem like we would be able to write the code or whatever that makes it process stuff if the entire human race cant even equal it in processing power. It doesent seem possible that we can build something smarter than ourselves. My brothers are in first grade now so when they are getting their first job they will be able to buy a super computer for only $1000 that is really weird. I have never thought of some countries over population problems such as china or india as a good thing but it seems to be that it is since they have more honors kids than we have kids. The fact that technology changes so fast discourages me from going out and buying anything right now because in a year it might go from 100 dollars to 10! Just like how after bluray won the format war bluray players used to be $600 and now you can get one for $250!

Wow. This is very interesting! I had no idea that estimates say that one day a computer could exceed the intelegense of the human race. Maybe one day in 100 years from now we will be seeing "computer doctors" instead of actual people or the computers will be making other computers instead of us. How can people possibly make a computer that is smarter than we are? I agree with Allison on this not making sence. I had no idea that almost more people in China speek enlish then in the United States. This video was very interesting to watch

Honestly, if india has 341 babiess every time during that video, I am going to watch it 10 more times. I just want all the indians to become overpopulated, then they will stop worshipping cows and start thinking about protection...LOL... (if ya know wat I mean... but then again, if they become over populated or just start seeing how wonderful america is, the might start to convert to mexican style and cross the border and live here illegally, darn immigrants, they need to get a citizenship, or a life, they will decide. But anyways that's pretty crazy because if any computer is created, it might create an empire like the nazis and attempt to take over the world with there followers (computers in this case).
So Ithink we should all just boycott computer companies and fight against all of it, so do not buy anymore computers, or else.

this was amaizing!! i cant even begin where to start! it made me feel real stupid when the fact came up about that china had more honors kids than we had kids! how is that even possible! the other one that scared me and worried me was how many children were being born in other parts of the world just during the time it took you to watch this thing! i think that is stupid becasue thanks to all the kids that are being popped out every day there are more and more lives to be worrying about becasue of starvation, one solution to that would be to stop making so many dang babyies!!! i mean if they know they can't even feed themselves, then what makes them think they can feed a kid or two?!?!?!?!?!?
i cant imagine how or what new things will come up when i am gone! the one thing that made me a little upset was that more than half of the things we are being taught in scool will not be of any use by the time we graduate!

I think computers actually are predicted to have computing power greater than the human race, not necessarily be "smarter" - unless AI comes into play.

Computers can already crunch numbers far faster and with fewer errors than people - however, they can't make art.

Not yet, anyway.

Wow that was awesome. i have never heard those facts before. The coolest fact was that there are 540,000 words in the english language, which is 5 times more than in shakespear's time. that was really cool.

I didn't really know that the IQ rates of different countries were this high. This slideshow gave some really good information and facts.

I think that Standardized test are not the only things students have to pass because in CRCT's anyone can be a good guesser and guess all the answers right and score high marks.

When I was studing in India, We had examinations each quarter. It was not multiple choice and we had to memorize every single thing and write the exam.

There was 1st 2nd and 3rd term exams.

Our homeworks and classworks not graded but the grade you get on the exams is what you have for that quarter.

At the end of the academic year they will average all you three exams and give you a percentage that will tell you if you passed that grade or not.

In my opinion I think U.S. should start a method like that to improve children's IQ.

i agree with platner. No one anywhere else knows about stem. I also agree with Mrs. Quenan when she says that people train for jobs that do not exist yet. This is a little preliminary.

its hard to believe that all these people in america (well kids at least) are training for jobs that are not even real yet!!! where do the teachers get the material to teach us those jobs even thogh prob. no one has any idea what the latest, coolest most well-paid job will be?!

Look at it this way - there was no such thing as a video game designer or a CGI special effects dude when I was a kid...

haha wow. some of this did surprise me but half of it didn't at all. i think it means that technology is taking over partially. things will be so different in 50 years. its hard to imagine. but its kind of like whats the point of going to college if the stuff you learn will be out of date within 3 years. it seems like you would have to go to college your whole life to keep up with it all. its kinda scary if ya ask me. i think that someday robots will take over the world like in some movie they made that i never saw though. i think that there will always be someone better at something than the u.s but it is really sad about all the statistics i do not know exactly but that the u.s is falling behind. i am kind of glad that there are less babies being born in the u.s than in other countries because there is only a limited amount of space, and someday we're going to have to move to the moon to make room for everybody, unless something happens now. but its kind of amazing how just while your watching that clip ..... this amount of babies are being born, i don't remember the number but i thought it was a lot. what number is high, the number of babies being born a day or the number of deaths that occur each day? i wonderrr it just all seems scary to me.

Just like how Aravind said, the things that I used to learn in 3rd, we learned it all over again here in the U.S. in 6th grade. I think that the American school system should be harder than it is now. By making the studies harder in the lower grades, like 3-7, teachers can make the students better prepared for challenges in high school and college. This might end up as a big issue in the future. Many immigrants come here mostly to get a good learning and a better job. If they don't find that here, which I think most elementary and middle schoolers don't, they might shift to other places and make the economy of the U.S. go down. In India and Saudi Arabia [I studied in an Indian school there], where I grew up, there were no advanced or enriched classes. Just the average, normal classes. All the students were expected to get ATLEAST a 90 to pass the final exams. It wasn't easy to pass. I studied till 4 in the morning for a week to pass the tests. My dad would stay awake with me if I had any questions. From the video, I kind of half expected that it would say that Asia has more honors kids than all of the students in N. America [or i think it said that].

My 2 favorite facts which surprised me the most were that China will soon have the biggest English speaking population in the world.I thought that it should have stayed Great Britain... or the U.S. The other fact was that India has 341 babies born every 6 minutes. I think its pretty sad how that happens cause they already have like 1,129,866,154 people [i googled it], I think they are gonna make the world really heavy =P

p.s. If anybody wants to watch this video click here. Its about the traffic "rules" of India. its like a 2 min video.

This was hilarious Jake. lmfao

It's true really. We as a whole communit or group are technologically advanced to that of a average american. and this next sentance is for lindsey. WHOAaaa GET control of your self!!!! we get the PICTUTRRE!!!!
and that i agree with lindsey. It's true i feel that some of my classes like S.S and spanish and math.(math because i know all of it already). Are comeplately irrelevant to my future occupation. 2 things that teaches you is math and science nothing more.that's useful. 20,000 people died in the geytsburg adress(just an example). How does that help!!!
