Packed With Planets?

Astronomers recently discovered a fifth planet around another star. This find is significant because it opens up the possibility of there being solar systems like ours with eight planets. It also increases the possiblity of being able to find some kind of life on another planet. This fifth planet is at a distance where water might be able to exist as a liquid, a factor most scientists agree is critical to life.

Read more here.

What do you think the chances are that we find another Earth-like planet in your lifetime?

What do you think the chances are that we will find life on another planets?

What do you think that life will be like?

Honestly, I think it is all weird how people first thought Mars would have water and life, but no, no life or water. SAme with alo tof other times. It does bring out the possiblities of other things liek another solar system and stuff, but I dont think life, but maybe water. WE will just have to see.

I think the possibilty of finding another planet like ours is very likely. Maybe not in my life time but someday difinatly. When (and if) we find this planet, I'm sure we'll discover many similarities between it and Earth and many differences aswell. It would have to have water like Earth since it is essentual for life. I'm assuming the temperature there would be a little different since the artilce said this planet is a little closer to its sun than we are to ours. Then there are the creatures who would live there. They would have different things to adapt to, so they wouldn't be like us either. Despite all this, I still think that it's very likly that someday, we will find some planet, somewhere in our ginormous universe that has the exact conditions fit for life.

so basically.....

I think this is perfectly possible. I mean the idea that there is only one solar system [ours] is positively silly! space is HUGE. Of course there are more than one. And about forms of life, I believe it's possible. Humans aren't the alpha species in this universe people!

Heyyy!!
I dont think we will find another planet similar to ours in my life time. It would take a long time to find it because it would be a long way away. If we find life on other planets it would be very simple forms. It would not nbe smarter than us because if it was it would have found us first. well i have to go now. bye bye!!

Interesting comments...when I was in 8th grade in 1978, we still thought there was a possibility of a space colony on the Moon or Mars by 2000. We had just landed on Mars 2 years earlier in 1976, and I admit, I was disappointed - I wanted there to be more.

If you read the whole article, you might have seen that it took 14 years to find this one...of course, with better technology, we make more discoveries...who knows - maybe something will happen in our lives.

I don't think we will find an Earth-like planet in my lifetime. I do think there is a slight chance that there will be a planet that will have bacteria, however. Not the type of animals that people think of at first, like a mammal for example. The "planets" that astronomers find these days are pretty extreme whether it comes to stable temperature or recycling water or whatever resource needed for life.

Pish Posh people. I really don't care if there's another life form out there. I mean sure we could find other solar sytems but come on. If theres another life form it's not like we can hang out with them whenever we feel like it or whatever. I think that if there was another life form around the big guy upstairs would have let us know by now. Ok that's it. peace out

After looking at all these comments i agree with some of them.
We might find some life forms in another planet just like ours, but mybe in another universe. I don't know when they will find it but I think it might be in the next 50 or 60 years because with more technology we get to know more.
Mrs. Quenan said that when she was in 8th grade they thought that they might find lifeforms in mars, but they did find water, so there must be some kind of life forms existing somewhere in the universe. I also think that those life forms might be even more advanced.
And if they found a planet where humans could live, when the earth comes to an end, they might evacuate us to that planet.
But lets see what technology can do or find.

I also think that there is a possibility that there are other planets similar to ours. Of course they will probabaly be different then ours in many ways, but if they have water, they can have life. I don't think that they will find a planet like that though, because I don't think our technology is not advanced enough. It would be really neat if they did find another planet with life though.

I think there could be another Earth-like planet...but I don't think it will be found while I'm alive. I highly doubt we are the only planet with living things on it out there. Space is HUGE, and i really don't think there is any way that we could be the only planet with water, people, and good living conditions. Even if they aren't hunam, something else living is out there...wow that's creepy...

I like to think that we will some day find life...a famous astronomer, Carl Sagan, had a math equation that illustrated just how big the universe was, and how even in the slimmest of chances, it was mathematically likely that life existed somewhere else.

Most of the extra-solar (outside this solar system) planets we find are more like Jupiter than Earth. That hurts our chances of finding life like us, but it doesn't mean we won't find life.

I think its incredibly narrow minded to say that we are the only life forms in the universe. Thats like something people from the Middle Ages would say. The universe is just too huge for that. And here's a fact. If you were travelling in a space ship at 17,000 miles an hour, it would take you 170,000 years to get to OUR NEAREST STAR. And there are billions of stars in our galaxy alone, and trillions of galaxies in the KNOWN universe (we can't even detect the extent of the universe). And after knowing this, can u still tell me that their can't b any other lifeforms out there? No? I thot so. Granted it won't be in our life times, I can garrentee that, because event radio frequencies take thousands of years to reach their destinations and we just started sending them out in the 1970's. But I almost am 100% positive there is life somewhere.

P.S.- The formula by Carl Sagan Mrs Q was talking about is (N= R*F*n*f*f*f*L. These all represent components such as probable life inhabiting planets to civilizations able to even communicate.

P.S.S- This entry was mainly for Robert... but no offense I'm just diss-caussing a topic. LOL, get it?

I think there might be another life form out there but who knows they could be here just blended into our people. Either they look like us or they hav super cool disguises. Whatever they/it are we are protected by good people of the world [if anything came we could nuculer bomb them]. That would be sooooo cool if they gave us spaceships [go martians!!]. Whatever is out there "we come in peace" BYE BYE

I think it is oerfectly possible that it will happen in my lifetime, unlikely, but perfectly possible. I mean, it's gotta happen sometime right? Why not in my lifetime? We might find life on another planet, but if we do it will probably just be some boring bacteria. Actually we probably will find some boring bacteria pretty soon on some planet or another. We have already found evidence of bacteria on mars so i dont see why we wouldent on another planet. I think the chances of finding any life at all are slim enough because im sure its out there but we will probably have to search like 200,000,0000,0000000000,00000 planets just to find some boring bacteria that will probably kill us all anyway. Anything's possible so maybe it will be intelligent but probably just some boring bacteria.

So apparently back in 570 B.C. when miss Quenan was in High School, they thought there could be a moon colony or a mars colony. Well it turns out they were wrong. O well. Life moves on. According to Nathan life moves on all over the univers.(he thinks there's other life out there). Umm ya so no. There's not really. But feel free to head out there into space with a rocket and find ur brain. its lost out there somewhere. But watever. it's nice to have diss-cussions with you Nathan

Elyes - there is a good possibility that any life we do find will not be intelligent, and will likely be some kind of microbe. As far as our solar system goes, the location most likely to have life is not a planet, but Jupiter's moon Europa. It has a crust of ice over an ocean that may contain life like the deepest parts of Earth's oceans.

And Robert, I'll have you know I was a proud member of the class of 569 BC - get it right.

I find it hard to believe that earth has life but no other planets do. I actually find it hard to believe earth has life on it and how! but thats how we discovered evolution and religion.......planets out there might have life but we are not advanced enogh to the point of intergalactic travel
lol that was geeky

I think it is possible for another planet like Earth to exist. There is so much out there that we can't be totally sure of what there is. Anything could be out there and we can't say that it isn't possible. I don't think we will ever find the planets and if we do it won't happen for a very long time. Even if we do find a planet, I don't think we would know what to do with the informatoin.

There are a lot of factors hindering our discover of life on another planet - if it's even there. One is technology and the other is time-space. Space is so big, and it takes so much time to travel through it, that without some way to bend space-time, we may never find stuff in our lifetimes.
